Statement from the Two by Two Rescue Board of Directors, posted on Facebook, July 10, 2025.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has shared their concerns and continues to support the mission of Two by Two Rescue.
Since founding Two by Two Rescue in 2002, Sonya King has devoted her life to saving animals, establishing the organization as a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2005.
For two decades, Sonya operated the rescue from her personal residence, personally nurturing and rehoming hundreds of dogs. Until 2022, she received minimal compensation, and the organization relied almost entirely on the dedication of volunteers and foster families. When Two by Two could no longer operate from its first facility in Hoover, Sonya transformed her home into a fully operational rescue center. Her tireless efforts have earned Two by Two recognition from local, regional, and national media, as well as numerous merit-based grants and awards.
Guided by a faith-based mission to alleviate the suffering of abused and homeless animals, Two by Two has rescued over 8,000 animals since its inception, with more than 5,000 saved since 2020, reflecting our significant growth and positive impact on the community.
The Board of Directors is completing its comprehensive review of concerns raised regarding animal care, donation practices, and allocation of funds. Our preliminary review does acknowledge that while mistakes were made in working with animals in a time of crisis, these stemmed from an overwhelming passion to help animals in need. The full review is being concluded, and a response is forthcoming.
The Board will also release a full audit from Warren Averett, a prominent area accounting firm, as soon as it is available. We will respect the findings of this audit and use it as a guide to revise, if needed, any of our financial standards and practices as a registered nonprofit.
The inspired work of Two by Two continues with unwavering commitment. We would like to express our deep appreciation to Sonya for her lifelong dedication to Two by Two; and to our loyal donors, volunteers, and fosters whose support sustains our faith-driven mission to rescue abused and homeless animals. With your continued love and participation, Two by Two looks forward to furthering its vital work.
Thank you for standing with us.
